WESEF 2010

Planning for WESEF 2010 is well underway.  We are pleased to announce that WESEF 2010 will once again be hosted by Pace University at the Briarcliff Campus.  Please mark your calendars for Saturday March 13th, 2010. We are predicting this will be our biggest and best WESEF to date!

Teachers should complete the school registration and organize student forms to be submitted by November 23rd, 2009.  Forms submitted to SRC Chair Angelo Piccirillo, Ossining High School, 29 S. Highland Ave., Ossining, NY 10562.  Checks should be submitted to WESEF Treasurer Greg Horrace, 27 Egan Rd., Cold Spring, NY 10516. 

The deadline for the second wave of forms will be announced shortly.  Please watch for additional emails from the WESEF committee.

WESEF 2009 Awards & Winners

Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2009 Westchester Science & Engineering Fair.  Thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, over 250 awards were given to the young researchers to reward their hard work and comittment to science.  

WESEF FINALISTS - Ross Bruck from Fox Lane HS, Elizabeth Cai from Briarcliff HS, Josh Elkind from Yorktown HS, Jennifer Fasman from Mamaroneck HS, Ian Matthews from Irvington HS, Alexander Mendez from Mamaroneck HS, Jack Miller from Mamaroneck HS, Lingzi Ouyang from Ossining HS, Teams: Stepahie Capogna (Yorktown HS) & Tara Bonnano (Sleepy Hollow HS), Kyle McCann & Mohit Tiwari from Yorktown HS, Lauren Browne & Marcela Erazo from Fox Lane HS, and Eugenia Volkova (John Jay HS) & Alexander Saboe (Somers HS).

These students were selected as having the top 8 individual and top 4 team projects from WESEF 2009 and will be traveling to Reno, Nevada in May to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair where they will compete with over 1500 students from over 50 different countries around the world for over $4 million in prizes and scholarships!

    • 8am                    Judges arrive
    • 9am                    Doors open for student registration
    • 9am - 3pm         Student presentations
    • 3pm - 4:30pm    Public viewing session
    • 4:30 - 5pm         Breakdown & remove posters
    • 7pm - 9pm          Award ceremony (Family and visitors are welcomed!)

Preparing for the Fair

Maximum Size of Project
Depth (front to back): 30 inches or 76 centimeters
Width (side to side): 48 inches or 122 centimeters
Height (floor to top): 108 inches or 274 centimeters

Maximum project sizes include all project materials and
supports.

Remember - The following is NOT allowed on the board:
1. Your name/ School Name
2. The name of the institution where you conducted the research
3. Acknowledgements - names/ institutes cannot appear on the board

Not Allowed at Project or in Booth
1. Living organisms, including plants
2. Taxidermy specimens or parts
3. Preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals
4. Human or animal food
5. Human/animal parts or body fluids (for example,
blood, urine)
6. Plant materials (living, dead, or preserved) that are in
their raw, unprocessed, or non-manufactured state
(Exception: manufactured construction materials used
in building the project or display)
7. All chemicals including water (Exceptions: water
integral to an enclosed apparatus or water supplied by
the Display and Safety Committee)
8. All hazardous substances or devices [for example,
poisons, drugs, firearms, weapons, ammunition,
reloading devices, and lasers (as indicated in item 5 in
the section of these rules entitled “Allowed at Project
or in Booth BUT with the Restrictions Indicated”)]
9. Dry ice or other sublimating solids
10. Sharp items (for example, syringes, needles, pipettes,
knives)
11. Flames or highly flammable materials
12. Batteries with open-top cells
13. Photographs or other visual presentations depicting
vertebrate animals in surgical techniques, dissections,
necropsies, or other lab procedures
14. Active Internet or e-mail connections as part of
displaying or operating the project at the Intel ISEF
15. Prior years’ written material or visual depictions on
the vertical display board. [Exception: the project title
displayed in the Finalist’s booth may mention years or
which year the project is (for example, “Year Two of
an Ongoing Study”)]. Continuation projects must have
the Continuation Project Form (7) vertically displayed.
16. Glass or glass objects unless deemed by the Display
and Safety Committee to be an integral and necessary
part of the project (Exception: glass that is an integral
part of a commercial product such as a computer
screen)
